📌 5 — When KPIs become the strategy, the strategy dies

KPIs are useful. But KPIs can also mislead.

The moment teams start optimising the metric instead of the mission, you are on dangerous ground.

I’ve seen:

  • Revenue targets that kill profitability
  • Cost targets that kill growth
  • Efficiency targets that kill innovation
  • Acquisition targets that destroy culture

The CFO’s job isn’t to police KPIs — it’s to keep them honest.

Great leadership keeps the mission central, and the metrics in service of it.

When KPIs drift from reality, numbers will look good for a while… until they suddenly don’t.
